ice ice baby

The ice storms have left my house in perfect photographic conditions. My younger sister is always up for a photoshoot, so we braved the bitter cold yesterday in the name of art. The photos turned out quite nicely I think. Here's link to the photo story I used them for-

So. I decided to start this blog so that I can keep everyone updated when I study in Greece this summer. But that's about then and this is now. What's going on?

It is winter break and the flocks of students have migrated to their respective homes for the holiday season. I, being one of them drove home Saturday morning. The ice storms on Thursday and Friday left the whole world frozen. Everything reminded me of the story told in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close to Oskar Schell by his father about the sixth borough of NYC-

"The sidewalks are covered in ice, the stained glass of the public library is straining under the weight of the snow. There are frozen fountains in frozen neighborhood parks, where frozen children are frozen at the peaks of their swings- the frozen ropes holding them in flight."

Tree branches were frozen mid sway, bushes were frozen mid bend- it was nature's way of stopping time even just for a little while. As I drove past the frozen trees I noticed how grey everything looked. The cloudy sky was grey, the trees appeared grey, and the snow covered asphalt was grey. For once the world was showing its true colors. Too many times we think things are black and white- when in reality, everything is just a shade of grey. There are no absolutes.

I smiled.
